Fanatec Podium Direct Drive PS4 Racing Wheel Front Air Intake Mesh - Should i remove it ?

Just received a brand new Fanatec Podium Direct Drive PS4 Racing Wheel
Noticed a mesh covering a front air intake and manual says nothing should be covering the front air intake.
Why is it there ? Is it to block dust ? Or Does it just a packaging protection layer ?
Should i remove it ?
