PC Config for iRacing

edited May 2020 in iRacing

Hi all,

I am reclycling an "old" Optiplex to have a go at iRacing and need some advises to upgrade some of the components :

  • Model : 9020MT Optiplex
  • CPU : i7 4790 Quadcore 3.6GHz 8 threads
  • RAM : 24GB (2x8 + 2x4)
  • HDD 1Tb : woud it be beneficial to add an SSD 240Gb as bootdrive ?
  • PSU : standard 290w (upgrading to an Aerocool 600w)
  • Current OS : Windows 7 Pro x64 ; i understand iRacing wont provide support for Windows 7 therefore I should upgrade to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit ?
  • Current GPU : AMD Radeon R7 250 : on the basis i will either run a triple 24" display setup or an Ultrawide 49" 5120 x 1440, would the AMD be sufficient or should i upgrade to something like a ZOTAC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6GB GDDR6 Twin Fan ?
  • Fanatec Setup : DD1 F1 podium bundle with V3 pedals

Any help will be appreciated

  •  i7 4790 is still a viable CPU

SSD for booting is the number one upgrade on any computer without an SSD. Get something with a DRAM cache. Anything of name brand should work.

For GPU, I don't think an R7 250 will be able to drive those displays at a reasonable refresh rate. iRacing isn't very demanding, but even a GTX 1660 SUPER seems lacking to play at that resolution.

  • Do you think the GTX 1660 Super would also be lacking with 3no displays at 1920 x 1200 or would something like a GTX 1660 Ti or even RX 5600 XT be more suitable ? Thanks for your help

My Vega56 that i bought used (I got a very good deal) does a great job with 3 monitors at 1080P.
