McLaren GT3 V1 OLED behavior

I have a CSL DD 5nm base, and have always used it with my CSL Steering Wheel P1 V2. Recently though, I got an used McLaren GT3 V1 wheel, with QR1. It belonged to a friend of mine, he passed it onto me as he's switching his simrig's ecosystem.

I connected the wheel to my base, turned it on, it did the whole calibration routine, everything worked fine, but the OLED screen was blank. I then proceeded to install the latest drivers and updated the wheel's firmware to the latest version (37) and as I was flashing the new firmware, the display came to life, everything working perfectly.

I tried it for a few hours, everything went well. I then switched back to the CSL wheel, everything working as it should, drove for a bit and powered everything off for the day.

Next day, I reconnect the McLaren wheel, and the display is blank again. The wheel works just fine, FF is good, all buttons are OK, I can drive normally, but the display seems dead. I tried re-flashing the firmare, and again the display lit up as the firmware was being flashed, and worked normally from then on. I tried a few different sims, everything worked as expected.

Next day, I power the base up, the wheel calibrates, but the display is again dead. I try installing an older driver, to no avail. The wheel still works normally, except for the display. I try flashing an old firmware, and again the display comes back to life while I'm flashing the firmware, and stays on for as long as I'm playing. The CSL wheel's display and lights will work fine every time I connect it. For the McLaren wheel, I basically have to re-flash its firmware every single time I want to have a functioning display. The wheel works fine otherwise.

The thing is, I saw my friend swapping rims in his rig before I got his McLaren wheel, and the display was OK. I wonder if I'm missing something here, if it has something to do with drivers/firmware version, DD base or whatever. And I tried searching the internet for a similar scenario, but found nothing. Any clue as to what might be going on?

Hey Eduardo! Thanks for sharing all the details – it sounds like a pretty interesting situation with the McLaren GT3 V1 wheel! From what you’re describing, it seems like there could be a communication issue between the wheel and the base that's affecting the OLED display. Since the wheel works fine otherwise, it might be worth double-checking the connections and ensuring everything is seated properly, especially the QR1.

It’s also possible that the firmware update is not fully sticking on some boots, which could be causing the display to go blank. If you haven’t already, try resetting the wheel’s settings through the Fanatec software and performing a factory reset. That might help with a fresh start and ensure that the firmware update stays intact.

Lastly, if everything else is working fine with the CSL Steering Wheel, it could be worth contacting support directly for more insight into any compatibility or software quirks that might be specific to your setup. We’re here to help! Best, your Fanatec team.

  • Hi! Thanks for replying. The connections are all OK, pins seem to be in good shape. I'm inclined to think it might indeed be a problem with the firmware not sticking properly, as the display works fine after flashing a firmware, but goes blank after I power off/disconnect the wheel and reconnect/power it back on.

I've reset the wheel settings in the Fanatec software, but I can't find any option to perform a factory reset. Is there any particular procedure for that?

Hi there! Thanks for the update. While there isn’t a specific “factory reset” option in the Fanatec software, you can try clearing the settings manually by resetting the wheel to its default state through the Fanatec Control Panel. However, given the issue you're describing, it might be best to contact our customer support team directly. They can provide more tailored troubleshooting steps or guide you through a potential firmware fix. We're here to help get things sorted out as quickly as possible! Best, your Fanatec team.

  • OK I'll try reaching support directly then. Thanks for the help anyway!
