Hi,
I could not find this question before but I'm wondering as a new driver. I want to start with the 5nm and then switch to the 8nm.
So when I buy the 8nm version, do I still get the 5nm brick?

No, you would only get the big PSU.
Can someone explain to me why people are paying a $150 for a 180 W power supply. You can get one of them off lying for 50 bucks and splice it in with the connector you already have
I'd assume you're paying for the R&D and the increased risk of something breaking when running 8 Nm at 100%. Fully reasonable. It could've been a software upgrade as well, costing $150, that can't be pirated.
No matter what this stiff is more than worth the money, compared to the competition.
There's no software DRM in the power brick. It just delivers 180W of power. The connector isn't proprietary either. You're paying for the convenience of not doing it yourself and giving Fanatec no possible ammunition to use if you somehow manage to burn out the motor, as unlikely as it is.
Not true. The way the premium bundle works is that you get the basic bundle PLUS the extra bits.
The basic bundle is a boxed package that includes the base, wheel, clamp and power supply all in the same box. The premium bundle gives you that, and adds the load cell brake pedal and boost pack.
So in answer to the OP's question, yes, you'll be able to play with the 5nm PSU and switch to the 8nm PSU later 👍
